Educational programmes in Lee Valley

Each year over 38,000 people of all ages and abilities enjoy learning in the 10,000 acre outdoor classroom which stretches from rural Hertfordshire to the banks of the River Thames in east London. The park is a fabulous mosaic of marshes, grassland, wooded areas, meadows, open water and rivers, supports a huge variety of wildlife, and is home to some of the most inspirational sports venues in the world. We provide outstanding environmental and heritage education programmes which link to the National Curriculum and exam syllabuses. Our sports sessions give all ages the chance to enjoy some of the best sports around in world class surroundings with great coaching.

Outdoor learning

Our environmental and heritage activities aim to engender a sense of ownership and understanding of the natural world, drawing on internationally important nature reserves and a wide array of species and habitats. Each year over 20,000 children enjoy our programmes led by Youth and Schools Service experienced Staff. Youth and Schools tutors are Makaton trained and are Accredited Practitioners of the Institute of Outdoor Learning.

Mindfulness is an important part of all our sessions. Students are encouraged to be in the present through positive outdoor sensory experiences, benefitting their overall wellbeing. Youth and Schools sessions can help schools provide opportunities for problem solving and developing risk assessment skills to help build resilience.

DEFRA’s 10 year plan (2018) highlights:
‘Playing and learning outside is a fundamental part of childhood, and helps children grow up healthy.’
‘Spending time in the natural environment…….. improves our mental health and feelings of wellbeing. It can reduce stress, fatigue, anxiety and depression.’

Residential accommodation for youth and schools groups is available at the YHA Lee Valley, Cheshunt (call 03453 719 057 for booking information). Lee Valley Regional Park Youth and Schools Service can assist with putting together packages of activities for youth hostel residents.

We have the following accreditations:
